What is the RUBIvet project?
We have developed NANOPLEX™ technology for rapid identification of bacterial infections in 15 minutes. The RUBIvet project enables us to further diversify our R&D pipeline through the development of additional probes to address Veterinary Urinary Tract Infections (UTI).
Our CEO, Neciah Dorh
“Our motivation is to challenge the distinct lack of innovation in this market and address the growing frustration amongst modern veterinarian with a simple, all-in-one solution to urine testing in animals”.
“In this project, we will be working closely with veterinary market leaders, to deliver a rapid bacterial identification platform that maintains the same quality of results expected from a full laboratory analysis at a fraction of time, cost and inconvenience of the gold standard”
COVID-19 and the Veterinary market
Many businesses have been impacted by the effects of COVID-19. According to a recent survey of 532 veterinary surgeries by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, 66% reported losing over half of their business as a result of social distancing measures implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. These surgeries now operate using remote consultations which rely on insufficient information and preventative antibiotic use.
As many consultations are dependent on concerned pet owners to describe the problem, lab tests are necessary to confirm the presence of bacteria in urine. Laboratory-based microbial culture have been the gold standard for over 50 years.
Despite being referred to as the gold standard, 48-72 hour turnaround-times cannot influence a Veterinarians decision to treat your pet during an appointment. Veterinary studies have shown that only 17% antibiotic prescriptions are supported by positive culture and the remainder are dispensed on suspicion of bacterial infection.
Antimicrobial Resistance continues to loom as a public health concern that will be on par with the recent pandemic, but Antibiotic misuse is unavoidable when the only definitive solution to date takes at least 2 days to return a result.
NANOPLEX™ technology reduces the result turnaround- time from 2 days to 15 minutes. With a new panel of probes developed during the RUBIvet project, we will enable a rapid test to support Veterinarians at the point-of-care.
